2024 Bunbury Severe Weather Support Register
Background information
TORNADO
A thunderstorm and tornado impacted Bunbury on the afternoon of May 10 2024.
A tornado developed on the Bunbury coast near Mindalong Beach at about 4pm and travelled about 6km inland as far as Bunbury Regional Prison.
The severe weather event resulted in damage to homes and other assets and infrastructure in College Grove, Withers and South Bunbury.
More than 200 properties were assessed to have some level of damage – ranging from homes that were left unliveable, to properties that sustained only very minor damage.
Nine homes were destroyed, while 16 were severely damaged.
INDUSTRY + GOVERNMENT COME TOGETHER TO SUPPORT REBUILDING EFFORTS
To address the challenges facing by the community in the aftermath of the tornado, the South West Development Commission facilitated a roundtable between government and industry.
This meeting sparked discussion about supporting recovery and rebuilding efforts.
An online register has been established as a platform for industry to register their interest in potentially contributing to recovery and rebuilding efforts. This register has since been expanded to cover offers of assistance for the severe weather event that impacted Bunbury on June 1. A total of 10 properties were destroyed – two residential and eight non-residential.

- Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements – Jointly funded disaster recovery assistance has been activated to support those impacted by the recent severe storm and tornado in the City of Bunbury in Western Australia’s South West.
