Funding to research new emergency accommodation options - 26 August 2009

Emergency accommodation options in the region could be revolutionised with help from funding through the South West Regional Grants Scheme.

Agencies for South West Accommodation (ASWA) received $22,590 through the first round of the Royalties for Regions program to research ways of improving living arrangements for victims of domestic violence.

Traditionally women and children caught in domestic struggles have been forced to leave the family home and seek refuge in a women’s shelter, with schooling among the aspects of life disrupted.

ASWA chief executive officer Neil Hamilton said the ultimate outcome of the study would support women and children to continue to live in the family home, while men were helped to find lodging at alternative accommodation.

“This will allow people to keep some normalcy in their lives while a more suitable arrangement is worked out,” he said.

The emergency accommodation project is one of 66 to share in $3.5 million in the first round of the South West Regional Grants Scheme.

The scheme is administered by the South West Development Commission as part of Royalties for Regions, a program designed to promote long-term development in Western Australia’s regions.

Funding is provided to assist in infrastructure, services, community projects and provision of headworks.
