$128,000 for outdoor gyms in the South West - 18 August 2009
South West residents wanting to improve their fitness levels will soon be able to slip on a pair of walking shoes and head to their nearest outdoor gym.
South West Development Commission chief executive officer Don Punch today announced plans to install outdoor gym equipment at parks and along walking paths across the South West.
Mr Punch said the move would boost the health of the region’s residents by providing publicly accessible gym equipment.
“As obesity levels rise, it is important to encourage people to exercise,” he said.
“Outdoor gym equipment, including rowing machines and cycling seats, will be fun additions to established walking routes.
“They are a fantastic way of promoting fitness and will further opportunities for people to adopt healthy and active lifestyles.”
A total of $128,000 has been put towards the South West Community for Life project, a new partnership between the South West Development Commission and local governments throughout the region.
Along with the City of Bunbury, the shires of Harvey, Collie, Dardanup, Capel, Donnybrook-Balingup, Busselton, Boyup Brook, Bridgetown-Greenbushes, Augusta-Margaret River, Nannup and Manjimup are expected to benefit from the project.
“There are many suitable sites throughout the region where these pieces of equipment could be placed including along nature walk trails, in disadvantaged areas, near tourist locations and in central business districts,” Mr Punch said.
“The South West Development Commission identified the need for outdoor gyms in the region and is now working with the shires to have the gym equipment purchased and installed."
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the project would benefit residents of the South West.
“The South West Community for Life program is an excellent initiative that will improve the health of people living in the region and enhance community amenities and outdoor spaces,” he said.
