Planting the seeds of knowledge in Margaret River - 17 August 2009
The South West Development Commission continues to help Margaret River Primary School’s kitchen garden grow.
Following the provision of a $10,000 grant to help establish the garden last year, the Commission has kept up its support for the blossoming project.
The Commission’s chief executive officer, Don Punch, lent his green thumbs to the garden on Wednesday August 12 by picking up a shovel and planting a bay tree.
The plant is the latest addition to a vegetable patch bursting with organic produce and which is teaching students to grow, nurture, harvest, taste and prepare healthy food choices.
As part of the project students learn about food and where it comes from, while selling the produce they grow to teachers and the wider school community. Proceeds from sales go back into the garden.
Mr Punch congratulated the staff, students and volunteers who had worked to make the project a success since the first planting in April this year.
“The kitchen garden is an excellent initiative and a credit to those involved with it,” he said.
“Students are learning life skills and an appreciation for fresh, seasonable vegetables.”
