South West wine promoted in the United States - 8 September 2008
California might be home to one of America’s most famous wine regions, but it will be Australian brands on the lips of wine buyers during a trade event in San Diego this month.
The South West Development Commission and Department of Industry and Resources, with the support of Austrade, have organised a series of events across the United States to promote premium wines from Australia’s South West.
A highlight of the visit will be on September 15 when a San Diego-based wine dinner is held aboard Dennis Conner’s America yacht to coincide with the 25th anniversary of one of Australia’s greatest sporting triumphs – the victory of Australia II in the 1983 America’s Cup.
Tastings will also take place in Phoenix, Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York City.
Austrade TradeStart officer Mat Lewis, who works with the South West Development Commission to boost export opportunities for the region, said eight wineries were set to participate.
“The road show will help increase the profile of South West wine, and also food and art, among American buyers,” Mr Lewis said.
“It has the potential to lead to new export opportunities for South West businesses.
“The United States is Australia’s biggest export market, but there are still significant opportunities for the sale of premium wine in niche markets.
“With currency fluctuations improving with the US dollar we can expect a growth in sales within the US of premium wine.”
