Historic Pemberton Pool gets new lease on life

Many towns have a local swimming pool, but none are housed in as spectacular setting as the historic Pemberton pool.

Pemberton Visitors Centre manager Paul Nolan said the pool, with its majestic backdrop of towering karri trees, was a popular spot with local and visiting picnickers and swimmers.

“The pool began in 1926. The town’s timber workers got together and put the money together to build it,” Mr Nolan said.

Mr Nolan said the pool fell into disrepair in the mid 1980s but a group of passionate locals had worked to get it back into pristine condition.

“We have been able to install a new septic system, put underground water in place and $30,000 worth of fencing,” he said.

“Local families use it all the time. It’s a popular place for kids after school and we also use it as a venue for local festivals.”

Future plans for Pemberton include further upgrades for the pool and development of an extreme mountain bike trail masterplan that would utilise the bushland surrounding the pool.

“These projects will make Pemberton an even more attractive place to visit,” Mr Nolan said.

“We appreciate the support of the South West Development Commission, which has helped us with State Government grants.”
