Fast train proposal

The State Government is investigating the feasibility of Bunbury being linked to Perth by a high speed train service.

The train, which would travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometres an hour, would do the trip in one and a half hours as compared to the existing two-and-a-half hour Australind train service.

Premier Alan Carpenter announced the feasibility study in February.

“The study will look at a modern diesel train that would use the new electrified line from Perth to Cockburn Central, then proceed down the median of the Kwinana Freeway and the new Perth-Bunbury Highway,” the Premier said.

“The new and more direct route would terminate in the Bunbury CBD and could reduce travel time by at least a third.”

The Premier said there was potential to expand the service southward as demand grew.

He said the needs of communities currently served by the Australind would be protected in any future plans.

The feasibility study would also give the community an opportunity to comment on the proposal.

The study is expected to be completed in the first half of next year.
