Recycling waste water in Margaret River

Traditionally Margaret River has used its namesake river to water recreation and sports grounds and school gardens.

The Augusta-Margaret River Shire Council has kicked off a project to recycle waste water to do the job and save tapping into the river.

Council director infrastructure services officer Wayne Prangnell said extensively treated grey water and sewerage was dammed for 12 months before use.

“This is really an environmental project because it will reduce the demands on the Margaret River,” he said.

Mr Prangnell said several land developers had expressed interest in tapping into recycled water to provide future estates with garden and possibly toilet-flushing water.

“The water is treated so there is no smell or health risk,” he said.

He said the council was getting a lot of support for the project.

“We are making some fairly big changes in the way we are doing things,” he said.

“The South West Development Commission has helped us get through the regulatory process.”
