Mobile Youth Space
The ‘Out There’ Mobile Youth Space, a custom-built caravan jam packed with youth-oriented activities, has been a big hit since taking to the road and visiting the region.
The youth space, built with funding from the South West Community Foundation and support from the South West Development Commission, has already visited Eaton, Margaret River and Capel.
The artistically decorated caravan was developed as a response to two issues most commonly raised by young people in the South West – the need for a safe and welcoming ‘youth space’ and access to activities and facilities, usually hindered by lack of transport in smaller towns.
The initiative is presently the only one of its kind in Australia.
Jobs South West manager Posy Barnes said the van, managed by her organisation, was out on the road as part of a weekend taste tester pilot project, funded by the South West Development Commission and Lotterywest.
“The taste tester means each local government area within the South West will be visited by the facility for free within its first year of operation,” she said.
“Through the taste tester young people living in regional towns and surrounding areas will be able to take part in a weekend full of activities facilitated by our staff at Jobs South West.”
The ‘Out There’ Mobile Youth Space is also available for hire by youth, community and sporting groups for not-for-profit events.
