Invest South West
Through the program 'Invest South West' the South West Development Commission is encouraging skilled people and entrepreneurs to relocate to our region.
The South West offers a vast number of business opportunities as well as employment opportunities, which the Commission actively promotes to people intrastate as well as overseas. These opportunities and the unique lifestyle makes the South West an attractive place to settle for people from WA's metropolitan area or even overseas.
Business Opportunities Expo
To increases the awareness of business opportunities in the South West to potential investors and entrepreneurs from Perth, interstate and overseas the Commission attends the Business Opportunities Expo in Perth. This expo takes place annually and attracts approximately 5,000 people with an interest in buying or setting up a business in Western Australia.
In June 2005 the Commission promoted the South West as an ideal location for the third consecutive year, this time in partnership with the Bunbury Wellington Economic Alliance. The expo has proven to be a huge success for the region, attracting many enquiries from Perth residents and business migrants with an interest in locating to the South West Region.
Skilled Migration Program
The Commission has a team in place to address the skill shortages that exist on the local labour market. One of its initiatives is the skilled migration program, through which we assist local businesses with persistent vacancies to employ skilled people from overseas.
As a Regional Certifying Body for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs the South West Development Commission has processed 175 applications from local businesses wishing to employ a skilled migrant in the 3 years prior to June 2005. In addition, the Commission receives many enquiries on a weekly basis from local businesses as well as skilled people overseas relating to skilled migration.
In order to attract suitably qualified skilled migrants to the region the Commission actively promotes the South West as an ideal destination. This is done in conjunction with the State Government's Skills Migration Unit and other Regional Development Commissions, and in consultation with local business and industry. The Commission organises information seminars for local business people, produces and distributes brochures for skilled migrants and attends expo's, such as Emigrate 2005 in London, the world's biggest migration expo.
