Regional Futures Conference

Bunbury is poised to host a new national ‘Futures Conference’ on 15-16 February 2007 which will identify and discuss emerging global mega-trends and how they impact Australian communities.

The two-day national conference, titled “Critical Horizons – Exploring the Future of Regional Australia” is being organised by the South West Development Commission in partnership with the City of Bunbury, Edith Cowan University and the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The aim of the Conference is to look “over the horizon” in order to stimulate and broaden the debate on where our region is headed and to brand Bunbury and the South West as a centre for innovation and new ideas.

The conference will feature two nationally-acclaimed futurists and several other expert speakers.

“This will be a thought-provoking and stimulating event and should attract a lot of interest nation-wide,” said SWDC Chief Executive Officer, Don Punch.

“These types of forums are essential for keeping world issues in our consciousness so that we consider global trends in our planning and everything we do.”

Issues to be covered will include such things as the knowledge economy and emerging technologies such as – biotechnology, nanotechnology and advanced medical technologies.

Changes in society, such as the super-longevity revolution, and development pressures on the environment will also feature heavily in discussions at the conference.
