Public invited to have say about vision for transforming Bunbury’s waterfront

Thursday, 1 October 2015

Members of the public are invited to have their say about a landmark vision for transforming Bunbury's waterfront that aims to improve the city's shorelines for community use and grow the local marine and tourism industries.

Officially unveiled for the first time on Thursday evening, artist impressions paint a picture of a modern city with a vibrant water's edge, buoyed by a lively marina featuring cafes and shops, greatly enhanced public open space, better marine facilities, and a working harbour.

SWDC chief executive officer Don Punch said people were encouraged to share their thoughts about the vision for the waterfront stretching from Casuarina Boat Harbour to Koombana Bay, which had been developed after considerable public consultation.

"The feedback people provide will be considered when finalising the vision, so it's important that you take up the opportunity to have your say," he said.

"Once the vision has been finalised, we will then put the project forward to be considered by State Government for funding and hopefully move towards construction.

"The redevelopment of the Koombana Bay precinct is the area that is likely to be worked on first, with other precincts set to be transformed further down the track.

"For example, what's presented for Casuarina Boat Harbour, including the marina with shops and accommodation, is designed to complement the way Bunbury is likely to develop into the future.

"In some ways the vision for Casuarina Boat Harbour may look futuristic but it's very much in line with other coastal cities and builds on Bunbury's strengths as a waterfront location.

"Overall, the plan has tried to balance the needs of the boating and marine industry of Bunbury, with the needs of people who want to enjoy a coastal lifestyle.

"Once complete, we hope to have a bustling recreational, tourism and marine hub that will grow business and jobs, and further enhance Bunbury's appeal as a great place to live and visit."

To have your say on the vision, complete the online survey at www.swdc.wa.gov.au before 9am on Thursday October 29. Printed copies of the survey can be requested by contacting SWDC on 9792 2000 or info@swdc.wa.gov.au , or by visiting SWDC on the 9th floor of the Bunbury Tower.
