Next step in planning for Bunbury’s marine facilities

Thursday, 22 January 2015

The next stage of laying the foundations for marine facilities development in Bunbury is underway following the appointment of consultants to undertake strategic planning of the Outer Harbour.

Town planning and design firm Taylor Burrell Barnett has been appointed to prepare a proposal for public comment for the land known as "Area 7" on the Bunbury marine facilities concept plan.

The consultants will look at a range of possible uses for the land, which includes Casuarina Harbour and sections that will no longer be used for port-related purposes after 2018 when leases at the Bunbury Outer Harbour expire.

Possible future uses for the site could include new boat launching and storage facilities, marine maintenance and refueling areas, and commercial and mixed use developments such as offices, cafes, restaurants and accommodation.

However, any proposed new uses for the land put up for consideration would need to coexist with a working port and meet the requirements of the local marine industry sector.

South West Development Commission chief executive officer Don Punch said the engagement of consultants represented another step forward in plans to enhance Bunbury's marine facilities and waterfront.

"As the project progresses, we will continue to keep people informed about ways they can be involved and have their say," he said.

"We look forward to sharing the draft concept plan with the public and giving people the chance to comment on it before more detailed planning is carried out."

The creation of the Bunbury Waterfront Outer Harbour Masterplan is being funded by SWDC, Landcorp and the Department of Transport, with consultants reporting to the Bunbury Marine Facilities Steering Committee.

The consultants will build on the work of the committee, which released a concept plan for enhancing Bunbury's marine facilities last year.

The committee was formed to provide advice to the State Government on what marine and shore-based facilities should be developed around the Bunbury Waterfront, including Koombana Bay, Casuarina Harbour and the Outer Harbour.

It is chaired by Bunbury MLA John Castrilli, coordinated by SWDC and includes representatives from LandCorp, Department of Transport, Southern Ports Authority, Department of Lands, Department of Planning, City of Bunbury, Bunbury Marine Facilities Alliance, and Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industries
