South West’s China connection aims to link with more businesses

Tuesday, 21 April 2015

South West businesses will soon be able to get more involved with the Bunbury-Jiaxing Business Office, with the organisation set to open up its membership.

Since its establishment in 2008 to foster links with China, the office has been supervised by a group of founding partners.

Bunbury-Jiaxing Business Office liaison officer Edwin Zhuang said the new arrangement will allow people to nominate and vote in people to the committee of management.

"By opening up our membership, we anticipate more people will be encouraged to have a say about our activities and direction, and be in the know about opportunities which may benefit their organisation," he said.

With the view to acting as the "gateway for business between China and the South West of Western Australia", the office supports business, investment, educational, and tourism activities and initiatives between the two areas.

It has been instrumental in facilitating new sister city relationships between places in the South West and China, and often plays a key role in official visits by delegations.

"Though based in Bunbury at South West Development Commission headquarters, our helping hand extends across the entire South West region," Mr Zhuang said.

"We offer a variety of services including the provision of cultural advice, trade assistance, translation and communication, and language classes."

The latest Mandarin course, which got underway at Edith Cowan University South West Campus on Thursday April 16, is booked out.

The office is currently working with the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industries to give local businesses the opportunity to take part in a delegation to China.

The visit, scheduled to take place later this year, will include the opportunity to visit the China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) and the South West sister city of Jiaxing.

Also on the horizon is a new website that will be a helpful tool for both people in the South West and China when it is launched in the near future.

The Bunbury-Jiaxing Business office is currently supervised by a committee comprising the South West Development Commission, City of Bunbury, Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Bunbury Wellington Economic Alliance, Edith Cowan University South West Campus, Regional Development Australia - South West, and Bunbury business representatives.
