Have you seen what’s happening in Withers lately?

Tuesday, 29 July 2014

A new monthly calendar has been created to help people keep track of the wide range of activities taking place in Withers.

Put together by the South West Development Commission, the Withers Community Calendar lists events, workshops and groups organised by the State Government agency, as well as those run by other organisations.

SWDC chief executive officer Don Punch said the calendars will be delivered to people's homes each month and also made available to collect from key locations such as the Withers Community Library.

"I encourage you to take up the opportunities listed in each month's calendar to learn new skills, make friends and improve your fitness by participating in the workshops, clubs and events listed in the calendar each month," he said.

Mr Punch said from August, primary school students living in Withers will have the chance to get help with their homework by attending a new after-school group.

"We are pleased to have partnered with the Milligan Community Learning and Resource Centre to establish the Homework Club for the purpose of offering local children assistance with their studies," he said.

"Homework can be a struggle but primary school students living in Withers will be able to drop in to the Withers Community Library from 3pm to 5pm on Wednesdays during the school term and take advantage of the support on offer.

"A teacher will be available to field queries and give help if students want it, or students can simply get on with their work while in the company of their peers.

"There will be free afternoon tea for those who attend, as well as free wi-fi and easy access to books."

Activities like the homework group are the result of the Withers Urban Renewal Strategy, which was developed following significant input from local residents and aims to breathe new life into the Bunbury suburb.
