Shaping the future of Withers
Thursday, 2 August 2012
It's already a family-friendly suburb situated close to the beach and boasting an array of community facilities. Now Withers is set to become even more appealing.
The City of Bunbury and South West Development Commission today agreed to work together to lay the foundations for the suburb's transformation into an even better place to live.
Working with planners and members of the community, the project will see the creation of a vision for the suburb which will be used to guide future development and investment.
South West Development Commission chairman Steve Harrison said the venture provided an exciting opportunity for the Commission, City and community to work together on long-term planning for the neighbourhood.
"It's not every day that an opportunity comes along to help shape the future of a suburb, and I am delighted to announce that the Commission has allocated up to $80,000 towards the project on top of the significant contribution already made by the City of Bunbury," he said.
"We are certainly getting behind this project and we encourage members of the community to show their support in the months ahead by getting involved."
Bunbury MLA John Castrilli said he welcomed the launch of the project and looked forward to seeing how the future of Withers could be shaped with input from planners and the local community.
"Withers has a lot going for it - it is close to the city and the beach, has the beautiful natural attraction of the Maidens Reserve and is close to facilities such as Hay Park and the health and education campuses," he said.
"We need to build on these strengths to make it an even better place for people of all ages, helping to build a thriving and proud community.
"By looking at the future of the suburb as well as its history, we can guide the planning so that it makes the most of its strengths and builds on opportunities for recreation and employment within the suburb."
