Instrastate Travel Restrictions

Intrastate travel restrictions came into effect at 11:59pm Tuesday 31 March 2020 to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

These restrictions will prevent non-essential travel across regional boundaries.

Western Australian intrastate travel is defined as movement through the boundaries of the regions of Western Australia.

These regions are:

  • Perth and Peel (due to their proximity, the Perth and Peel regions will form one region)
  • South West
  • Great Southern
  • Goldfields-Esperance (stronger restrictions apply to the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku)
  • Mid-West
  • Wheatbelt
  • Gascoyne
  • Pilbara (stronger restrictions apply to parts of the Shire of East Pilbara)
  • Kimberley (stronger restrictions apply to the entire Kimberley region)

Exemptions do apply to those travelling across regional borders for:

  • work purposes;
  • to transport freight;
  • to attend medical appointments;
  • to attend school or an educational institution (where necessary);
  • to those who do not have access to groceries or supplies within their region
  • catering for family members; and
  • compassionate grounds.

The State Government would like to make it clear that the freight industry will continue to operate.

People are encouraged, where possible, to assist police by preparing documentation, such as a letter/email/SMS from an employer, to support their travel.

For the WA public, the WA State Government is advising anyone travelling or planning a trip outside their region to stay at home and to return home if currently outside of their region.

National parks and temporary accommodation will also be closed to tourists.

Police have the power to issue fines to anyone who chooses to ignore the order.
