Shire of Manjimup
Overview
The Shire of Manjimup (population of 9,995 in 2008) is the centre of the forestry industry in the South West Region. While there are still significant operations in that industry, the volume of hardwood production in the area has decreased with the implementation of the Regional Forest Agreement. With this reduction in harvested native jarrah, future processing of hardwood is now being focused on value adding.
Plantations of hardwood and softwood are also becoming a significant part of timber production in the area. The total volume of South West bluegum woodchips exported through the Port of Bunbury was 1.1 million tonnes in 2008/09.
In addition to forestry there are also vineyards in the local area, and horticulture is an important and well established industry. The local retail sector is also a significant employer, with the town of Manjimup being the regional centre of the Warren Blackwood area.
