Shire of Collie

Overview

The town of Collie is located 60 kilometres from the regional port city of Bunbury and is well serviced by both road and rail.  The current population of the shire is 9,079 (2008). Mining and power generation are the major contributors to the local economy.

Historically a coalfield, Collie currently has the presence of two major coal mining companies, Griffin Coal Mining Company and Wesfarmers Premier Coal Ltd. Mining takes place at the Premier, Muja, and Ewington mine sites, producing all the state's coal supplies, which are sold on the domestic market. Western Power uses the majority of the coal for electricity generation with the remainder used by industry in the production of alumina, mineral sands, cement and nickel.

The Worsley Alumina Refinery situated near Collie processes bauxite mined in the Shire of Boddington. Alumina production is currently at record levels with a processing value of $1,65 billion in 2007/08.
