Shire of Capel
Overview
The shire's boundaries take in the picturesque towns of Capel and Boyanup, the semi-rural settlements of Stratham and Gelorup, and the beachside estates of Peppermint Grove and Dalyellup. The current population of the shire is 11,935 (2008). The average annual growth rate over the previous five years was 8.3 per cent.
Capel continues to benefit from the mining of mineral sands within the shire, with the tourism industry also becoming an important part of the local economy. Agricultural activities across the shire include dairy, beef, horticulture and viticulture.
Population growth is being driven by a major land development at Dalyellup Beach, a 660 hectare coastal strip located south of Bunbury. This development is a $50 million joint venture between landowners Homeswest, developers Satterley Real Estate and Home Building Society. An estimated 3,300 lots are expected to be released over the life of the development.
