Energy

Electricity is generated from Collie coal fired power stations at Muja and Collie, with the newest 300-megawatt power station having been built at Collie and becoming operational in mid-1999.

South West generated electricity feeds directly into the State power grid through high voltage power lines that traverse both the plateau areas and the coastal plain.

Over 50 per cent of the State's power supply is generated from Collie coal in the South West.

A $260 million gas fired power station at Kemerton Industrial Park has recently been completed.

The new plant will supply Western Power with 260 megawatts of peak generating capacity over the next 25 years.

The plant, owned and operated by Transfield Services, is an open cycle gas turbine and  capable of using diesel fuel as a back up.

A gas pipeline extends from the North-West Shelf in the Pilbara Region as far south as Bunbury. Natural gas is supplied via laterals to Capel and Busselton as well as to the alumina refinery at Worsley and other large industries providing them with a cost-effective supply of energy.
