Focus on the affect of water on regional development - 16 June 2008

Leaders will be able to gain valuable insight into a precious resource when the South West Development Commission hosts a seminar on water management next month.

Participants in the seminar – the third in the acclaimed Critical Horizons series – will examine how a shortage of water might affect the future development of the region.

Renowned guest speakers will include Australian Research Centre for Water in Society group leader Jeff Camkin, Queensland Water commissioner Jamie Quinn and Western Australia Department of Water director general Kim Taylor.

South West Development Commission chief executive officer Don Punch said the objective of the event, as with all Critical Horizons seminars, was to heighten awareness on emerging global trends and how they could affect the region.

“Drawing on both State and national speakers we will examine water as a limitation to regional growth and models for decision making on the use of water in a drying climate,” he said.

“If you are seriously interested in future access to water and how scarcity might affect you then this is a vital seminar.”

The event, which will include lunch, will be held at the Edith Cowan University South West Campus on July 24 from 10.30am to 3pm.
