South West Academy of Sport a step closer - 2 April 2008

The South West Academy of Sport is a step closer to reality with the search for an inaugural chief executive officer and professional service providers.

The academy, set to begin operating later this year, will provide high level training and support for up and coming South West athletes in a range of sporting disciplines, allowing them to develop locally rather than having to travel to Perth.

SWAS board chairman Don Punch said the appointment of a capable, visionary chief executive officer was an important key to the academy’s long term success.

“The academy’s chief executive officer will be responsible for providing strategic direction as well as overseeing the day to day activities,” Mr Punch said.

“He or she will liaise with the academy’s partner sports to ensure smooth management of sports programs and also be the public face of the academy.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for the right candidate. The South West Academy of Sport is going to have a big impact on the identification and development of local sports stars of the future as well as contribute to improvements of existing sports in the region.”

Mr Punch said the academy was also calling for professional service providers in a range of sports-related fields.

“We are looking for people and organisations to be part of a professional register of services to support development of athletes,” he said.

“Services we are looking for include medical, physiotherapy, injury prevention and recovery, nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, media marketing and time management. The goal of the academy is to not only improve an athlete’s sporting ability but their life skills.”

Mr Punch said the inaugural four sports and major sponsorship announcements were expected soon.
