Bridgetown to investiage proposed historical centre - 6 February 2008

A proposal to display Bridgetown’s proud history in a custom-made exhibition centre will be investigated thanks to a $20,000 State Government grant.

Member for South West Region Matt Benson presented the cheque to the Bridgetown Historical Society today (Wednesday, February 6) on behalf of South West Minister Mark McGowan.

“Bridgetown is steeped in history but until now that history has not been fully documented at one site,” Mr Benson said.

“The Bridgetown Historical Society has joined forces with the town’s Heritage Group to investigate the building of a $600,000 centre that would showcase the region’s rich heritage.

“The centre would provide a home for displays and interactive exhibitions as well as provide comprehensive information about the area.

“This $20,000 grant will help conduct a feasibility study into the viability of the centre.”

Mr Benson said the proposed facility would complement the town’s growing profile as an historical tourist destination.

“Bridgetown is a heritage listed town that attracts a lot of visitors because of its rolling hills and natural rustic charm,” he said.

“This facility would provide a tourist icon and also be invaluable as an educational resource.”

The grant is part of the South West Development Commission’s (SWDC) Regional Development Scheme, which provides funds for a range of community based initiatives designed to improve the quality of life in the region.

“The SWDC has provided more than $3.1 million of State Government funds into the South West since the Regional Development Scheme started seven years ago,” Bridgetown-based SWDC board member Nick Oaks said.

“The grants assist efforts like the planning for the Bridgetown Heritage Cultural Centre. It is extremely rewarding to support local efforts to improve the South West.”
