Greenbushes seniors to benefit from function centre - 6 February 2008
A new seniors function centre for Greenbushes has taken a step closer to reality thanks to an $18,631 grant from the State Government.
Member for South West Region Matt Benson presented the cheque to the Greenbushes Aged Community Committee today (Wednesday, February 6) on behalf of South West Minister Mark McGowan.
“This grant will help build the Stinton Gardens Function Centre, a new facility for the community to help provide seniors services currently not available,” he said.
“The centre will support health and wellness programs, provide meeting rooms and areas for administration. We hope to attract visiting health professionals such as podiatrists, physiotherapists, dieticians and social workers.”
Mr Benson said the centre was the result of the hard work of the Greenbushes Aged Community Committee, which had raised funds for the facility.
“The committee was formed to bring a more unified approach to service the area’s growing senior population,” he said.
“One of the important needs was a function centre to support improved services and provide needed administration space.”
The grant is part of the South West Development Commission’s (SWDC) Regional Development Scheme, which provides funds for a range of community based initiatives designed to improve the quality of life in the region.
“The SWDC has provided more than $3.1 million of State Government funds into the South West since the Regional Development Scheme started seven years ago,” Bridgetown-based SWDC board member Nick Oaks said.
“Because the grants are generally part of a bigger fund raising effort of local groups, the projects supported usually bring great benefits to the community.
“This project will improve the lives of seniors in Greenbushes both medically and socially.”
