Helping leaders face future horizons - 13 November 2007
Leaders will be able to gain valuable insight into the future of renewable energy this month thanks to the inaugural seminar in a series of Critical Horizons events sponsored by the South West Development Commission.
The seminars are a follow-on from the acclaimed two-day Critical Horizons Futures Conference held earlier this year, which attracted national experts to Bunbury to look at emerging global trends and how they will affect regional communities.
“One of the recommendations of the conference was to continue efforts to encourage leaders to look over the horizon, to examine the mega trends that are happening around the world,” Critical Horizons innovation roundtable chairman Don Punch said.
“It is not going to be business as usual in the region in the future. It is important leaders are informed so they can make the most effective decisions to help our region be one of international excellence.”
The first seminar, which will be held at the Edith Cowan University South West Campus on November 22, will examine the future prospects of renewable energy.
Renowned experts Dr Ray Willis, Cliff Jones, Matthew Keys, Mike Dymond and Matthew Rosser will present energy alternatives such as solar, geo-thermal, wind and bio-energy.
“The seminar will demystify the use of renewable energy, which is becoming more and more of a consideration with increasing environmental issues related to some tradition ways of energy production,” Mr Punch said.
“It will critically review the realistic contribution “renewables” can make to the energy needs of Western Australia, the economic cost, the constraints and the latest technological breakthroughs.
“The follow-on Critical Horizons seminars are aimed at leaders in both the private and public sector.
“These seminars are essential for keeping world issues in our consciousness so that we consider global trends in our planning and development activities.”
Mr Punch said the all-day seminar would include morning and afternoon tea, lunch and refreshments after the event.
