Capel's new hall a focal point for the community - 22 October 2007

Member for South West Region the Hon Adele Farina officially opened Capel’s new $1 million dollar community hall recently.

The state-of-the art hall includes a public library, a purpose-built room for the shire’s heritage collection and archives, meeting rooms for youth, community functions, the arts and tourist display areas.

The design of the front of the building provides a striking physical presence in the town’s main street.

“The old hall was a popular place for dances, weddings, visiting entertainers and Christmas celebrations,” Ms Farina said.

“When it was built more than 30 years ago it was designed to hold community functions for a small dairy town and farming community of 600 people.

“Capel now has an estimated population of 1800 and new developments and land releases will see the town grow to about 3000 people by 2015.

“Capel Shire Council identified the need to rebuild the facility to cater to the increasing population and continue to provide a focal point for the community.

“This new hall will meet the changing demands of local people and provide a venue for a range of activities for people of all ages.”

Ms Farina said the hall would also continue to be used by a range of local sporting groups such as badminton and martial arts.

She said the State Government has provided funding for the facility through the South West Development Commission, Lotterywest and Tourism WA.

The Federal Government, Shire of Capel and local business had also provided funding to pay for the new hall.
