Looking for leaders - 5 June 2007

Do you know a Bunbury person who is an inspirational leader?

Someone like mother of four and foster mother to ten Olivia Rovers, who has an outstanding commitment to improving the wellbeing of Noongar people?

Ms Rovers was last year’s winner of the Inspirational Community Leadership Award at the Southern Region Leadership Forum.

The two-day The Leadership Awards and Forum includes inspirational speakers and interactive workshops for individuals and groups from the Peel, Great Southern and South West.

The South West Development Commission helps organises the annual forum. Commission chairman Stan Liaros said the awards and forum were designed to develop one of the region’s most important resources – local leaders.

“It is critical to identify leadership in our communities and support it,” he said.

“Fostering current and future leaders assure the continuing strength of our regions. The Leadership Awards and Forum helps us to achieve this.”

The forum also offers an opportunity to recognise the work of high achievers in local communities.

People like Juaini Taylor, a young woman living in Katanning, who is well known for her work in the local Malay community.

Juaini organised a youth festival for young people in her community and is a choreographer of her cultural dance group. She won the Under 35’s category of the 2006 Awards.

If you know an Olivia or Juaini living in your community, now is the time to nominate them or eligible community groups for the 2007 awards.
